Pulmonologists are doctors who specialize on diseases of the lung and respiratory tract, such as those of the throat, sinuses, nose, windpipe, or trachea, and sometimes diseases of the heart or other organs that are intimately associated with the respiratory system. "Pulmonology" is derived from the Latin word "pulmo," which means "lung." Internal medicine's specialization is pulmonology. The diseases of the respiratory system that are structural, inflammatory, and neoplastic (tumorous) have all been extensively studied by pulmonologists.Pulmonologists can and regularly do biopsies, but they rarely perform surgeries. A pulmonologist may also be sought to assess or treat catastrophic chest injuries.
